On the nose, this leads with lemon verbena, kiwi fruit, hints of cassis and white pepper. Warm lemonade and white spice are in the aromatics. In the mouth, the acidity is tight and refreshing, saline.

Nieuw-Zeeland heeft zichzelf op de internationale wijnkaart gezet met Sauvignon Blanc uit Marlborough. Maar ook in andere Nieuw-Zeelandse wijnregio’s wordt fantastische Sauvignon gemaakt. Bijvoorbeeld in Martinborough, dat tegenover Marlborough ligt, maar dan op het uiterst zuidelijke puntje van het noordereiland. Het klimaat is er vergelijkbaar met Marlborough: weinig regen, veel zon en groot verschil tussen dag- en nachttemperaturen.

Palliser wijngaard  Wijnmakers Palliser

Palliser Estate is er een van de belangrijke producenten. In een tijd dat er nog voornamelijk schapen graasden, was dit domein een van de eerste om druivenstokken aan te planten. Inmiddels bezit Palliser zo’n 72 hectaren, verspreid over zeven wijngaarden. Ze zijn gelegen op het Martinborough Terrace, wat gezien wordt als een van de mooiste terroirs van de streek. De wijnmaker is de zuideilander Guy McMaster. Hij heeft tevens de leiding over de conversie naar biologische teelt. 

De druiven voor de Estate Sauvignon Blanc zijn afkomstig uit drie verschillende wijngaarden. Om zoveel mogelijk pure fruitexpressie te behouden, vergist en rijpt de wijn in roestvrijstalen tanks. Wel blijft de wijn zes maanden bij de lie, voor wat extra structuur en complexiteit. Dit maakt ‘m niet alleen heerlijk om zo te drinken, maar ook een bijzonder mooie maaltijdbegeleider.

Proefnotitie

Fraaie, expressieve sauvignon met meloen, grapefruit en groene vijg in de geur. Mooi droog en heerlijk verfrissend van smaak. Opvallend rond in structuur en met een lange afdronk.  

Drinken bij

Verfijnde, iets rijkere stijl sauvignon om te drinken als aperitief, of te serveren in combinatie met schaal- en schelpdieren, gegrilde vis of groene salades.  

Houdbaarheid

Direct na de oogst op dronk; tenminste tot 3 jaar na oogstdatum houdbaar.
