The 2023 La Vizcaína Las Gundiñas has a more herbaceous nose, from old vines that might have 5% of white grapes. It's a wet year in a wet place, a vineyard that retains very well the water in drier years. It has a different expression that seems to transcend the place and vintage (Raúl Pérez compared it with the 2013), and it's more aromatic. I still think this plot behaves better in drier years...

Hoewel Raúl Pérez wijnen maakt in diverse delen van Spanje en bijvoorbeeld ook in Portugal en Zuid-Afrika, is zijn naam toch wel het meest verbonden met de noordwestelijke Spaanse streek Bierzo. Hier is hij niet alleen geboren, Raúl is ook een van de belangrijke pioniers die het bijzondere terroir van deze regio op de internationale wijnkaart zette.

Een van Raúls projecten in zijn geboortedorp Valtuille de Abajo is de bijzondere serie La Vizcaína-wijnen, gewijd aan de oude crus rondom het dorp. Las Gundiñas is er een van. De stokken in deze 2,2 hectaren tellende wijngaard zijn meer dan honderd jaar oud. De bodems van kalk en klei zijn beplant met mencia, bastardo, garnacha tintorera en doña blanca.

Wijnmaker Raúl Pérez

Raúl oogst de druiven wanneer de afzonderlijke rassen optimaal rijp zijn. Eenmaal geplukt, vergisten de druiventrossen in foeders. Er volgt een vrij lange schilinweking van 30-60 dagen en een jaar rijping in gebruikte vaten. Tot slot bottelt Raúl de wijn zonder filteren of klaren – dus er kan iets aan sediment in de fles achterblijven.

Doordat Las Gundiñas een vrij rijke, vruchtbare bodem heeft, is deze wijn meestal de meest toegankelijke en fruitige van de La Vizcaína-wijnen. De structuur is krachtig, terwijl de afdronk een tikje aards is. Een prachtige, gastronomische wijn om in te zetten aan tafel, bijvoorbeeld bij stevige vleesgerechten, of gerechten met bonen of linzen.

Proefnotitie

Granaatrood gekleurde wijn met verfijnde aroma's van blauwe bes, kers en laurier. Krachtig en vol in smaak met een levendige frisheid en stevige, rijpe tannine. De afdronk is aanhoudend.

Drinken bij

Krachtige, gastronomische rode wijn die bijvoorbeeld mooi combineert met stevige (wild)gerechten en bereidingen met paddenstoelen.

Houdbaarheid

Op dronk vanaf 3 jaar na de oogst en daarna ten minste 5 jaar houdbaar.
