The 2023 La Vizcaína La Poulosa is a little more rustic than the other reds from La Vizcaína range; it's a little earthy and has slightly dusty tannins. It comes from 2.2 hectares on clay soils, and the grapes ripen very early. It's one of the oldest vineyards in the village and tends to give low yields and concentrated wines. All the reds from Vizcaína fermented with 100% full clusters with 40 days of maceration and aged in old 500-liter barrels (from 2014 to 2015) for some 11 months and without racking until the following harvest...

De markante, eigenzinnige wijnmaker Raúl Pérez geniet een wereldwijde cultstatus vanwege zijn intuïtieve en minimalistische kijk op wijn maken plus zijn pionierswerk in zijn geboortestreek Bierzo. Raúl was namelijk een van de eersten om het unieke terroir van Bierzo tot expressie te brengen in zijn wijnen.

Dat doet hij onder meer in deze bijzondere reeks La Vizcaína: stuk voor stuk indrukwekkende terroirwijnen van tenminste 50 jaar oude stokken uit crus rondom het dorp Valtuille de Abajo. In wijngaard La Poulosa, aangeplant in 1940, bezit Raúl twee hectaren met mencia-, bastardo- en garnacha tintorera-druiven. Hoewel niet gecertificeerd, bewerkt Raúl de wijngaarden biologisch.

Omdat het Raúls voornaamste doel is de druiven en hun terroir tot expressie te brengen, beperkt hij de ingrepen in de kelder tot een minimum. Na de vergisting (grotendeels met hele trossen) en een lange schilinweking rijpt de wijn een jaar op gebruikte vaten van Frans eiken. Hij bottelt La Poulosa zonder klaren of filteren

In de fles treft u dan ook een pure, authentieke Bierzo barstensvol rood fruit, kruidigheid en mineraliteit. La Poulosa is de warmste cru, om die reden is deze La Vizcaína ook de meest rijpe en ronde van de vier en relatief jong toegankelijk. Drink ‘m bij voorkeur aan tafel, bijvoorbeeld bij een kruidig stoofgerecht of gegrild vlees.

Proefnotitie

Dieprood van kleur met wat ontwikkeling; krachtig van geur met rijp rood fruit, kruiden en nuances van leer. De smaakstructuur is vol, krachtig en in balans met milde tannine en een aanhoudende aromatische afdronk.

Drinken bij

Complexe wijn, fraai bij rijke gerechten van rundvlees of wild op kruidige schotels.

Houdbaarheid

Op dronk vanaf 3 à 4 jaar na de oogst; gemakkelijk 8 tot 10 jaar houdbaar.

The 2023 La Vizcaína Las Gundiñas has a more herbaceous nose, from old vines that might have 5% of white grapes. It's a wet year in a wet place, a vineyard that retains very well the water in drier years. It has a different expression that seems to transcend the place and vintage (Raúl Pérez compared it with the 2013), and it's more aromatic. I still think this plot behaves better in drier years...
